چکیده

This letter reports an optically induced cell lysis device that can selectively lyse a single cell within a group of cells, a function which cannot be performed using traditional tools. This chip-scale device was made of a photoconductive material, which can induce a nonuniform electric field at a specific position under illumination of a beam spot generating a transmembrane potential in the cell. With this approach, cell lysis can be performed using the optically induced electric field. Fibroblast cells and oral cancer cells were used to demonstrate the capability of the developed chip. In addition to lysing the whole cell, the developed method also allowed one to selectively disrupt the cell membrane without damaging the nucleus. Operating parameters such as illumination power density and beam spot diameter for cell lysis were systematically investigated. © 2009 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.3072593

MEMS Device for Osteoblast Cell Stimulation

---A fixed microelectrode device for cell stimulation has been designed and fabricated using microelectro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology. The dielectrophoretic forces obtained from fixed electrode structures producing non-uniform electric fields were then used for manipulating and positioning obsteoblast cells. Our experiments show that the osteoblasts experience positive dielectrophoresi...

Lab-on-a-chip technologies for proteomic analysis from isolated cells.

Lab-on-a-chip systems offer a versatile environment in which low numbers of cells and molecules can be manipulated, captured, detected and analysed. We describe here a microfluidic device that allows the isolation, electroporation and lysis of single cells. A431 human epithelial carcinoma cells, expressing a green fluorescent protein-labelled actin, were trapped by dielectrophoresis within an i...

A Concept of Moving Dielectrophoresis Electrodes Based on Microelectromechanical Systems (mems) Actuators

A concept of moving dielectrophoresis electrodes (MDEP) based on Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) actuators is introduced in this letter. An example design of tuneable dielectrophoresis filter is presented. Finite Element Analysis of the electrostatic field of the tuneable filter has been conducted. Results show that the trapping force can be adjusted by actuating the MEMS actuators. The p...
